Today, the sleepy town—with more than its share of outdoor cafés and restaurants—is
notable only for the chance to scramble up its massive fortifications (park your car in the
big lot, then cross the street into town and look right; the entrance to the walls is in the big
tower). These walls have been undergoing an extensive restoration, and the long, skinny
strip running over the ridge to the town of Mali Ston (described next) is already complete.
For a short wall experience, you can just do a circle around the stout lower walls (about
20-30minutes); foramoreserioushike,youcanclimb allthewayupandovertoMaliSton
(figure 45-60 minutes). Be warned that the walls—with all that glistening limestone reflect-
ingheat—aremuchhotterthanatgroundlevel,andthere'svirtuallynoshade(30kntoenter
