Getting There: Cappingthehillabovetown,it'sasteep10-minutewalkfromtheCavtat
waterfront. From the Church of Our Lady of Snows at the far end of the waterfront, climb
up the stairs (following mauzolej signs).
Visiting the Mausoleum: Over the course of one tragic year, all four members of
the wealthy Ra č i ć family—father, mother, son, daughter—died of the Spanish flu. From
1920-1922,inaccordancewiththeirwill,IvanMeštrovi ć wascommissionedtocrafttheirfi-
nal resting place. He used the opportunity to create a cohesive meditation on Christian faith
and death, made entirely of brilliant white stone from the island of Bra č . As you enter, take
a moment to appreciate how the interior ponders birth, life, and death. The four inner walls
of the octagonal hall hold the tombs of the departed; above each tomb, an angel lovingly
carries their soulsuptoheaven—spiriting them intoacupola studdedwithangel heads.The
floor has symbols for the four evangelists: Matthew (angel), Mark (lion), Luke (bull), and
