Vlaho Bukovac House (Kuća Bukovac)
One of the joys of traveling is getting the opportunity to learn about locally beloved artists
who are little known outside their homelands. Cavtat proudly introduces you to native son
Vlaho Bukovac (1855-1922), who grew up in this very house and went on to become the
most important Croatian painter of the modern period. Bukovac moved to New York City
with his uncle at age 11, beginning a life of great adventure. After a brief career as a sailor
(traveling toPeruandSanFrancisco), hetrained asanartist inParis, theninZagreb. Forhis
last 20 years, Bukovac spent his summers in Prague and his winters here in Cavtat. Touring
the collection (with good English explanations), you'll get to know Bukovac's life and his
works. Bukovac's paintings are mostly realistic (in accordance with his formal Salon train-
inginParis),butshimmerwithahintofPost-Impressionism;hislaterworksechotheslinky
