Sights in Cavtat
Waterfront Wander
Strolling along Cavtat's waterfront, you'll be immersed in a wrap-around bay and surroun-
ded by Europeans vacationing well. At the near end of the promenade, notice the big wa-
ter polo court roped off in the bay; Cavtat and Dubrovnik are the birthing ground for many
of the core players of the Croatian national water-polo team. Across the street is St. Nich-
olas Church, with a humble, dull interior (though hanging high in the altar area are Vlaho
Bukovac's paintings of the four evangelists). Next door is the skippable Baltazar Bogiši ć
Collection, a museum with a library and other items that once belonged to a wealthy law-
yer.Abouthalfwayalongthedrag,oneofthenarrowlanesleadingupthehill(appropriately
named Bukov č eva) takes you to the fine Vlaho Bukovac House (described next). At the
end of the main waterfront area is the Church of Our Lady of the Snows, commemorating
a freak—and seemingly miraculous—mid-summer snowstorm in ancient Roman times, be-
lieved to have been a sign sent by the Virgin Mary. Inside, above the altar, is a Vlaho Buko-
vac painting (from 1909) of Mary and the Baby Jesus watching over Cavtat. Climbing the

pointy tip for distant views of Dubrovnik's Old Town. This is one of the favorite spots in
this area for watching the sunset. (If you continue all the way around the point, in about 20
minutes you'll wind up back at the parking lot at the start of town.)
