preciate local art. The restaurant- and people-lined promenade is inviting, but the town's
best features are its twogems ofCroatian art: abreathtaking hilltop mausoleum bythe great
Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrovi ć , and the former home-turned-museum of the Cavtat-born,
early 20th-century painter Vlaho Bukovac.
Getting to Cavtat
Boats toCavtatleaveabouthourlyfromDubrovnik'sOldPort(80knround-trip,50knone-
way, about 45 minutes each way, hourly return boats from Cavtat). The boat deposits you
right along Cavtat's main seafront promenade. Note that a round-trip ticket is cheaper, but
you'llhavetoreturnwiththesamecompany(ratherthanonwhicheverboatisleavingnext).
You can also reach Cavtat by public bus #10, which leaves from Dubrovnik's main bus
station and also stops at the “cable car” bus stop above the Old Town (1-2/hour, 30-40
minutes, 20 kn). The bus brings you to Cavtat's parking lot (described next). Because of
Dubrovnik's one-way street system, the returning bus can't use the cable car stop. Coming
back from Cavtat, hop off at the bus stop that's along the main road high above the Old
Town—about a 5- to 10-minute walk down into town.
For variety, consider going to Cavtat by boat (buy a one-way ticket), then returning by
bus.
Drivers find Cavtat an easy detour when heading to points south, including Montenegro
or the airport; the town is well-signed off the main road. The big parking lot is at the back
of Cavtat's peninsula, just around the corner from the main part of town and seafront prom-
enade: Just walk past the TI, hook right at the busy street, and head for the waterfront.
Orientation to Cavtat
Cavtat is set within an idyllic, horseshoe-shaped harbor hemmed in by a pair of peninsulas.
Tucked around the back side of the peninsula is the parking lot, left-luggage office (gar-
deroba), and TI (July-Aug daily 8:00-21:00; Sept and June daily 8:00-20:00; May and Oct
Mon-Sat 8:00-19:00, Sun 8:00-14:00; Nov-April Mon-Fri 8:00-15:00, closed Sat-Sun; Zid-
ine 6, tel. 020/479-025, www.tzcavtat-konavle.hr ) . Cavtat is basically a one-street town,
but that street is a fine pedestrian promenade running along the harbor, with a few narrow
lanes winding steeply up into the hill. Capping the hill above town is a cemetery with the
Meštrovi ć mausoleum.
