Koločep
The nearest island to Dubrovnik, and the sleepiest, Kolo č ep's harbor arcs away from its
boat dock. Walking around it, you'll quickly reach a small main square with al fresco cafés
spilling out onto the seawall; beyond that is a sandy beach in front of a hotel, with rentable
chairs. Near the boat dock, well-signed steps lead up into the hills, passing several small
churches as well as Kolo č ep's little museum of ecclesiastical art (the only museum I saw on
the Elafiti). On a short visit, you'll barely have time to stroll the harbor; if your excursion
leaves you here a bit longer, consider a low-impact hike over the spine of the island to the
village on the opposite side, Gornje Č elo (about 1.5 miles away). You'll climb up stairs past
an old guard tower, pass a pink stucco church near a cemetery, then follow the narrow path
between high stone walls and past olive groves. You'll wind down to a little port town with
aninvitingbeach;loopingaroundtoPlacettakesyoutoawallofdramaticcliffs. Donje Č elo
signs lead you back to your boat.
