Getting There: Lokrum is reachable only by an official city-run boat, which departs
twice hourly from the end of the pier in Dubrovnik's Old Port (60 kn round-trip, 15-minute
crossing, runs April-Oct 9:00-18:00, mid-June-Aug until 20:00, none Nov-March).
Visiting the Island: From the Lokrum boat dock, walk up to the pink building—the vis-
itors center—to pick up a map of the island for 21 kn. Continuing up, you'll reach a fork:
To head across the narrow middle of the island, continue straight ahead, where you'll find a
monastery-turned-Habsburg-palace, a small botanical garden, uneven rocks that lead to lad-
ders where you can ease yourself into the sea, and a small lake (fed by an underwater canal
from the sea) called the “Dead Sea” (Mrtvo More) that's suitable for swimming. Or you can
hook left and curl around the cove to the island's most popular beach, on the Bay of Porto č ,
that's famous for its nude sunbathing. If you'd like to (carefully) subject skin that's never
seen the sun to those burning rays, follow the FKK signs from the boat dock for about five
minutes to the slabs of waterfront rock, where naturists feel right at home. Continuing past
