Sleeping and Eating on Mljet
Mljet Connections
The more time you spend here, the clearer it becomes: Dubrovnik isn't just a town, it's an
entire region. Stretching up and down the glimmering Dalmatian Coast from Dubrovnik
are a variety of worthwhile getaways. Just offshore from the city's Old Town—and access-
ible via scenic boat trip from its historic port—are enticing islands and villages, where time
stands still for lazy vacationers: the playground islet of Lokrum and the archipelago of the
Elaphite Islands. The serene resort town of Cavtat, just south of Dubrovnik, has some of
the best art treasures of this part of Dalmatia (including a gorgeous mausoleum designed by
Ivan Meštrovi ć ). To the north is a lush arboretum called Trsteno, with a playful fountain, a
600-year-oldaqueduct,avilla,achapel...and,ofcourse,plantsgalore.PokingintotheAdri-
atic is the vineyard-covered Pelješac Peninsula, anchored by the mighty little town of Ston.
And out at sea is the sparsely populated island called Mljet, a third of which is carefully
protected as one of Croatia's most appealing national parks, where you can hike, bike, boat,
and swim to yourheart'scontent. Best ofall, there'snobetter place to “come home to” than
Dubrovnik—after abusydayexploring the coastline, strolling the Stradun tounwindispar-
ticularly sweet.
