In-Depth Information
At any hostel, cheap meals are sometimes available, and kitchen facilities are usually
provided for do-it-yourselfers. Expect crowds in the summer, snoring, and lots of noisy

those traveling solo: Prices are per bed, not per room, and you'll have an instant circle of
friends. At most hostels, you can reserve online or by phoning ahead (usually with a credit
card).
Making Reservations
It's possible to travel most of the year without reservations, especially if you arrive
earlyintheday(althoughpopulartouristtownscanbecompletelyfullinlateJulyand
August). But given the good value of the accommodations I've found for this topic,
I'd recommend that you reserve your rooms several weeks in advance—or as soon
as you've pinned down your travel dates—particularly if you'll be traveling during
peak times. Note that some national holidays jam things up and merit your making
reservations far in advance (see “Holidays and Festivals” on here ) .
Because my favorite accommodations tend to be small-time entrepreneurs renting
only a few rooms, they book up fast with my readers. I've tried to list several good
options,soifyourfirstchoiceisfull,youcansimplytryothersonthelist.Sometimes
one of my listings might offer to find you somewhere else to stay. This can be con-
venient, but don't feel obligated—you'll have more control over your options if you
book direct, using my recommendations.
