In-Depth Information
Sleeping in Dubrovnik
You basically have two options in Dubrovnik: a centrally located room in a private home
(soba); or a resort hotel on a distant beach, a bus ride away from the Old Town. Since
Dubrovnik hotels are generally a poor value, I highly recommend giving the sobe a careful
look. For locations, see the map on here .
Be warned that the Old Town is home to many popular discos. My listings are quieter
than the norm, but if you're finding a place on your own, you may discover you have a late-
night soundtrack—particularly if you're staying near the Stradun.
No matter where you stay, prices are much higher mid-June through mid-September,
and highest in July and August. Reserve ahead for these peak times. Most accommodations
prefer to list their rates in euros (and I've followed suit), but you'll pay in kunas.
Sobe (Private Rooms): A Dubrovnik Specialty
In Dubrovnik, you'll almost always do better with a soba than with a hotel. Before you
choose, carefully read the information on here . All of my favorite sobe are run by friendly
English-speaking Croatians andareinsideorwithineasywalkingdistanceoftheOldTown.
There's a range of places, from simple and cheap rooms where you'll share a bathroom,
to downright fancy places with private facilities, air-conditioning, kitchenettes, and satellite
TV, where you can be as anonymous as you like. Most sobe don't include breakfast, so I've
listed some suggestions later, under “Eating in Dubrovnik.”
To search from home, you can use the regular booking sites (such as TripAdvisor.com
or Booking.com)—but if you want to book one of the places I've listed here, please book
direct (by sending them an email), which saves both you and your host money. There's no
point booking through a third party, which only adds a middleman to the process. Another
good place to search is www.dubrovnikapartmentsource.com , run by an American couple
and offering a range of carefully selected, well-described accommodations.
In the Old Town, Above the Stradun Promenade
These are some of my favorite accommodations in Dubrovnik. All are located at the top of
town, high above the Stradun, and all are good values. The first four are within a few steps
of each other, along a little block dubbed by some “Rickova ulica.” If you don't mind the
very steep hike up, you'll find this to be a wonderful enclave of hospitality. When one of
these places is full, they work together to find space for you. The last two listings are a few
blocks over, and nearly as nice (and equally steep). Because all of these hosts live off-site,
be sure to let them know when you'll arrive so they can let you in.
