In-Depth Information
Getting There: The cable car is easily the best option for reaching the summit of
Mount Sr đ (94 kn round-trip, 50 kn one-way, kunas or credit cards only—no euros; at least
2/hour—generally departing at :00 and :30 past each hour, more frequent with demand,
3-minute ride; daily from 9:00, June-Aug until 24:00, Sept until 22:00, April-May and
Oct until 20:00, Feb-March and Nov until 17:00, Dec-Jan until 16:00; doesn't run in
Bora wind or heavy rain, last ascent 30 minutes before closing, tel. 020/325-393,
www.dubrovnikcablecar.com ) . The lower station is just above the Buža Gate at the top of
the Old Town (from the main drag, huff all the way to the top of Boškovi ć eva, exit through
gate,andclimbuphilloneblock,thenlookright).Youmayseetravelagenciessellingtickets
elsewhere in town, but there's no advantage to buying them anywhere but here. The line
you may see at the cable-car station is not to buy tickets, but to actually ride up. For tips on
avoiding a long wait, see below.
If you have a car, you can drive up. From the high road above the Old Town, watch
for the turnoff to Bosanka , which leads you to that village, then up to the fortress and
cross—follow signs for Sr đ (it's twisty but not far—figure a 20-minute drive from the Old
Town area). If you're coming south from the Old Town, once you reach the main road
above, you'll have to turn left and backtrack a bit to reach the Bosanka turnoff. For hikers,
a switchback trail (used to supply the fortress during the siege) connects the Old Town to
the mountaintop—but it's very steep and provides minimal shade. (If you're in great shape
and it's not too hot, you could ride the cable car up, then hike down.)
Crowd-Beating Tips: The cable car has a limited capacity, and lines can get long when
several cruise ships are in town. It tends to be most crowded in the morning, shortly after
the cruises arrive (peaking around 11:00). If you come during this peak time, you may have
to wait your turn while watching several cable cars fill and ascend. But as the day goes on,
the lines tend to get shorter. I'd aim to visit later in the day—particularly if you can do it at
sunset.
