neath). The pristine-seeming Old Town was rebuilt using exactly the same materials and
methods with which it was originally constructed.
The path you're on alternates between straight stretches and stairs; as you walk you're
rewarded with higher and higher views. Nearing the summit, you pass a juice bar (you can
use the WCs if you buy a drink). At the very top, you enjoy the best possible view of the
Old Town—you can see the rooftops, churches, and the sea. For an even better view, if you
have the energy, huff up the steep stairs to the (empty) Min č eta Tower. From either view-
point, observe the valley-like shape of Dubrovnik. It's easy to imagine how it began as two
towns—one where you are now, and the other on the hilly island with the church spires
acrosstheway—originallyseparatedbyaseawatercanal.Noticetherelativelyregular,grid-
like pattern of houses on this side, but the more higgledy-piggledy arrangement on the far
side (a visual clue that the far side is older).
