In-Depth Information
By Bus: Dubrovnik's main bus station (Autobusni Kolodvor) is just beyond the ferry
terminal along the Port Gruž embankment (about 2.5 miles northwest of the Old Town). It's
straightforward and user-friendly, with pay toilets, baggage storage, and a helpful bus in-
formation window. To reach the Old Town's Pile Gate, walk straight ahead through the bus
stalls, then bear right at the main road to the city bus stop, where you can hop on a bus (#1,
#1a,#1b,#1c,#3,and#8)tothe Pile stop.Ataxi fromthe main busstation tothe OldTown
and most accommodations runs about 75 kn.
Alternate Bus Stop for Outbound Buses: For buses that are leaving Dubrovnik toward
regional destinations to the south (such as the airport or Cavtat), there's another bus stop
that's much closer to the Old Town, saving you the long journey out to the main bus station.
The “cable car” bus stop (a.k.a. “fire station” bus stop) is just uphill from the Buža Gate,
overlooking the old wall, right next to the bottom station of the cable car up to Mount Sr đ .
By Car Ferry or Catamaran: The big car ferries arrive at Port Gruž, two miles north-
west of the Old Town. On the road in front of the ferry terminal, you'll find a bus stop (#1,
#1a, #1b, #1c, #3, and #8 go to the Old Town's Pile Gate; wait on the embankment side
of the street) and a taxi stand (figure 70 kn to the Old Town and most accommodations).
Across the street is the Jadrolinija office (with an ATM out front) and a TI. The fast Nona
Ana catamaran from Mljet and Kor č ula also arrives near this big ferry dock.
By Cruise Ship: Some ships anchor just offshore from the Old Port, then send their pas-
sengersintotheOldTownontenders.OthersputinatPortGruž,justbeyondthebusstation.
To reach the Old Town, take a public bus or pay 80 kn for a taxi (described earlier, under
“By Bus”).
By Plane: Dubrovnik's small airport (Zra č na Luka) is near a village called Č ilipi, 13
milessouthofthecity.Abusmeetsarrivingflightsformostmajorairlinesattheairport,and
brings you to the Pile Gate just outside the Old Town, then continues to the main bus sta-
tion (35 kn, 40 minutes). Legitimate cabbies charge around 210-250 kn for the ride between
the airport and the center (though some cabbies charge as much as 300 kn; consider arran-
ging your transfer in advance with one of the drivers listed on here , or through your soba
host; airport code: DBV, tel. 020/773-333, www.airport-dubrovnik.hr ) . The karstic Ðurovi ć
Cave, which runs beneath the runway, may be open to the public; if you have extra time at
the airport and want to go spelunking, ask around.
Toget to theairport,youcantakethesamebus,whichtypicallyleavesfromDubrovnik's
main bus station 1.5 hours before each Croatia Airlines or Austrian Airlines flight, or two
hours before other airlines' international flights (the schedule is posted the day before—ask
at the TI). Generally, this bus also stops at the “cable car” bus stop near the lower cable-car
station just above the Old Town's Buža Gate; this can save you the hassle of going to the
main bus station—but confirm the schedule at the TI.
