In-Depth Information
I favor accommodations and restaurants that are convenient to your sightseeing activ-
ities. I look for places that are friendly, comfortable, clean, professional-feeling, English-
speaking,relativelyquietatnight,andfamily-run.Amajorfeatureofthisbookisitsextens-
ive and opinionated listing of good-value rooms. My favorites are small, family-run hotels
(which are rare) and friendly local people who rent “hotelesque” private rooms without a
reception desk (which are, thankfully, abundant). I'm more impressed by local character, a
handy location, and a fun-loving philosophy than flat-screen TVs and a pricey laundry ser-
vice. Obviously, a place meeting every criterion is unusual, and all of my recommendations
fall short of perfection. But I've listed the best values I could find for each price range.
