Sightseeing
Sightseeing can be hard work. Use these tips to make your visits to Croatia's and Slovenia's
finest sights meaningful, fun, efficient, and painless.
Plan Ahead
Set up an itinerary that allows you to fit in all your must-see sights. For a one-stop look
at opening hours, see the “At a Glance” sidebars for each major destination. The hours at
sightstendtofluctuatewithdemandfromseasontoseason(especiallyincoastaltowns),but
you can easily confirm the latest by checking with the TI or museum websites.
Don't put off visiting a must-see sight—you never know when a place will close un-
expectedly for a holiday, strike, or restoration. Many museums are closed or have reduced
hours at least a few days a year, especially on holidays such as Labor Day (May 1), Christ-
mas,andNewYear'sDay.Alistofholidaysison here ; checkmuseumwebsitesforpossible
closures during your trip. In summer, some sights may stay open late. Off-season, most mu-
seums have shorter hours.
Study up. To avoid redundancy, many cultural or historical details are explained for one
sight in this topic and not repeated for another; to get the full picture, read the entire chapter
for each destination before you visit.
At Sights
Here's what you can typically expect:
Entering: Bewarnedthatyoumaynotbeallowedtoenterifyouarrive30to60minutes
before closing time. And guards start ushering people out well before the actual closing
time, so don't save the best for last.
Photography: If the museum's photo policy isn't clearly posted, ask a guard. Generally,
taking photos without a flash or tripod is allowed. Some sights ban photos altogether.
Temporary Exhibits: Museums may show special exhibits in addition to their perman-
ent collection. Some exhibits are included in the entry price, while others come at an extra
cost (which you may have to pay even if you don't want to see the exhibit).
Expect Changes: Artworkcanbeontour,onloan,outsick,orshiftedatthewhimofthe
curator. To adapt, pick up any available free floor plans as you enter, and ask museum staff
if you can't find a particular item.
Audioguides: Manysightsrentaudioguides,whichgenerallyofferrecordeddescriptions
in English (sometimes included in the price, otherwise about $6-8). If you bring your own
earbuds, you can enjoy better sound and avoid holding the device to your ear. To save
