Near Hvar: Pakleni Islands (Pakleni Otoci)
These islands, just offshore from Hvar town, are a popular and easy back-to-nature day-
trip destination. The name means the “Devil's Islands” in Croatian, but in the local dialect,
pakleni refers to the resin used to seal the hulls of ships (which had to be boiled—hence
the hellish connection). These days, the islands harbor some popular nude beaches: The is-
land of Jerolim and the bay of Stipanska (or is it Strip anska?) on the island of Marinkovac
are particularly good places to spot—or sport—some bare skin. While the beaches used to
be predominantly nude, local captains have recently figured out that they get more busi-
nessiftheydon'tadvertise thenudistconnection—so thebeaches arenowmoremixedthan
they once were. For a bit more civilization, set your sights on the biggest island, known as
