Literally “Old Town,” this was the island's original settlement, dating back some 2,400
years. Today it's a likeably humble, workaday port town almost entirely lacking Hvar's
glamor-girl charm...and crowds. Simple fishing boats rather than luxury yachts bob in its
harbor, and its flat, labyrinthine street plan disperses the few tourists who venture here.
From the harbor, head up through town to the tallest bell tower; it marks the Church of
St. Stephen, which watches over its own quiet little square. Beyond that is the much smaller
Church of St. John, the core of which likely dates from the fifth or sixth century. Recently
