Inside the fort, there's very little in the way of posted descriptions, but the views over
townareterrific.Youcanalsoclimbdownintotheprison,sipadrinkatthecafé/bar,andvis-
it the one-room “Marine Archaeological Collection” (hiding inside the blocky central part
of the fortress; look for amphorae and muzej signs). This display features booty found at
three different Dalmatian shipwrecks, including a collection of amphora jugs (for more on
these jugs, see the sidebar on here ) . According to the exhibit, one out of every 50 voyages
in antiquity ended in a shipwreck. (And you thought flying was dangerous.)
ThecomplexonthehigherhillnearbywasbuiltbyNapoleon(whichisalsoitsnickname
amongst locals). In the 1970s, it was converted into an astronomic and seismographic ob-
servatory.
Strolling and Swimming
With typically Dalmatian crystal-clear water, Hvar is a great place to swim. Also typically
Dalmatian, virtually all of the swimming areas are rocky or pebbly. As you walk along the
