Hvar's main square, which is supposedly Dalmatia's biggest, is a relaxed and relaxing
people zone surrounded by inviting cafés filled with deliriously sunbaked tourists. For a
quick tour, begin by the harbor and face the cathedral.
To your right is the Arsenal building (housing the TI)—a reminder of Hvar's nautical
importance through history, thanks to its ideal location on the sailing route between Venice
and the Mediterranean. During the town's seafaring heyday, ships were repaired and sup-
plied in this huge building that still dominates the town. After nearly a decade of delays, the
Arsenal was recently restored (in honor of its 400th anniversary). The beautiful barrel-vaul-
ted space inside is used for special exhibits and private events. From near the TI, you can
climb the stairs to the terrace atop the Arsenal for fine views over the square.
Many of Hvar's buildings date from the 16th and 17th centuries, when it was an import-
antoutpostoftheVenetianRepublic.Facingthecathedral,noticethattheOldTownspreads
