Hvar town (with about 3,600 residents) clusters around its harbor. The harbor's eastern
embankment (to the right, with your back to the water) is where the big boats put in, and is
home to the Jadrolinija boat ticket office, most travel agencies and tourist services, and the
post office. At the top of the harbor is Hvar's long, wide main square, St. Stephen's Square
(Trg Svetog Stjepana). The Old Town scampers up the hills in either direction from the
square. Overlooking the town and harbor is a mighty hilltop fortress. Sprawling in both dir-
ections from the Old Town are nondescript residential zones packed with good-value apart-
ment rentals, many with sensational sea views.
Hvar's informative, no-nonsense TI is in the big Arsenal building right on the main square,
a few steps from the harbor. Pick up the helpful free map, ask about events, and confirm
