Hvar's hip cachet, upscale-ritzy “Croatian Riviera” buzz, and easy proximity to Split have
quickly turned this tidy little Dalmatian fishing village into one of the most popular (and
most expensive) destinations in Croatia. The island desperately wants to be thought of as
Croatia's answer to Mykonos or St-Tropez...and it's getting there. While the infrastructure
lags a bit behind (with potholed promenades and less-than-romantic cinderblock and rebar
in residential zones), the rows of yachts and sailboats tied up five deep in the harbor—and
the steady string of über-wealthy yuppies dressing up for a night on the town—don't seem
to notice. Although some travelers may find all of the glitz and high prices off-putting, the
setting is undeniably gorgeous, and the island provides a cosmopolitan contrast to its low-
brow rival, Kor č ula.
