Meštrovi ć came from humble beginnings. He grew up in a family of poor, no-
madic farm workers just inland from Split. At an early age, his drawings and wooden
carvings showed promise, and a rich family took him in and made sure he was prop-
erly trained. He eventually went off to school in Vienna, where he fell in with the
Secession movement and found fame and fortune. He lived in Prague, Paris, and
Switzerland, fully engaged in the flourishing European artistic culture at the turn of
