The enclosed harbor area is filled with working fishing boats and colorful dinghies that bob
inunison.Alongthebreakwater,noticethenewfishermen'slockers,wherepeoplewhoearn
theirlivingfromtheAdriaticstillkeeptheirsupplies.You'llseethemostfishingactionhere
in the mornings.
Thefarsideofthebreakwater—all glitzy whitemarble—is anotherworld,withapebbly
beach,attractiveplaza,andsomeofthebestviewslookingbackontheRiva.Afteritsrecent
renovation, this jetty has become a popular open-air, after-hours hangout for young people.
LikeSplititself, thesetwoworlds—thegrizzled fishermen mendingtheirnets,andtheteen-
agers laughing and flirting—coexist more smoothly than anyone might have guessed.
Beyond Matejuška, the harborfront embankment (which runs toward the Marjan penin-
sula) has also been rejuvenated and is now spiffed up with cafés facing moored sailboats,
creating a relaxing, scenic, largely tourist-free zone.
