In principle, the NAM was envisioned as a competitor of NATO and the Warsaw
Pact. But as the world'spolitics have changed, many NAM members are nowclosely
allied withother,morepowerfulnations.AndwhenYugoslaviabrokeup,mostofthe
countries that emerged preferred to join NATO and the EU.
So whatever happened to the rest of the NAM? It's still going strong, with 120
member states encompassing virtually all of Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia,
and Latin America. While the EU and the US wrestle for bragging rights as the
world's superpower, the NAM represents a majority (55 percent) of the world's pop-
ulation.
Hours: From April through October, the first boat departure from Fažana is at 6:45 and
the last trip is at 21:45 (last return from Brijuni at 23:00). The number of departures varies
withthetimeofyear:May-Septabouthourly,12/day;March-AprilandOct8/day;Nov-Feb
4/day.
English Tour: You're required to go to the island with a four-hour guided tour, much
of which is spent on a little tourist train. The only English-language tour usually departs
Fažanadailyat11:30.It'sessentialtocallaheadtoconfirmthescheduleandreserveaspace
on the tour (call or email at least a day before, or three days ahead in peak season, tel. 052/
525-883, izleti@brijuni.hr ).
If you can't make it on the English tour, you're welcome to join any tour you like (Croa-
tian,German,Italian, etc.).Whileit'spossibletoslipawayfromyourgroupandexplorethe
island on your own, park officials discourage it. (But, since hotel guests on the island can
move about freely, it's generally no problem.) Staying with the tour for most of the trip is
wiseinanyevent,asthere'slotsofgroundtocoverinalimitedamountoftime.It'spossible
torentbikesatthehotelwheretheboatputsin.You'retechnically requiredtotakethesame
boat back with the rest of your tour, but this isn't closely monitored.
Visiting the Island: Great Brijuni Island can be visited only with a tour (described
above). After a 15-minute crossing from the mainland town of Fažana, visitors arrive at the
island's main harbor, which is a hub of activity and the site of its two hotels. Outside this
area,theislandislargelyundeveloped,withjustafewtouristfacilitiesandhousesofpeople
who live here. There are virtually no cars—most people get around by bike, golf cart, or
the little tourist train you'll board to begin your tour. As you spin around the island, you'll
