In-Depth Information
As you walk, keep your camera ready, as you can find delightful scenes down every side
lane. Remember that, as crowded as it is today, little Rovinj was even more packed in the
Middle Ages. Keep an eye out for arches that span narrow lanes (such as on the right, at
Arsenale street)—the only way a walled city could grow was up. Many of these additions
created hidden little courtyards, nooks, and crannies that make it easy to get away from the
crowds and claim a corner of the town for yourself. Another sign of Rovinj's overcrowding
are the distinctive chimneys poking up above the rooftops. These chimneys, added long
after the buildings were first constructed, made it possible to heat previously underutilized
rooms...and squeeze in even more people.
