The Karst has two big cave systems: Postojna and Škocjan. Each one is massive.
Stalagmites andstalactites—in aslow-motionlovestory—silentlyworktheirwayto-
wardeach other,athirdofaninchpercentury,until that last dripneverdrops.Miner-
alspickedupbythewaterasitseepsthroughvariousrockscreatethedifferentcolors
(iron makes red, limestone makes white, and so on). Both caves were excavated and
explored in the mid-19th century.
However, what you'll see inside each cave system—and how you'll see it—is
quite different. Slovenes debate long and hard about which cave system is better. The
formations at Postojna are slightly more abundant, varied, and colorful, with stalag-
