For a longer, more strenuous, and more scenic return, turn left and loop around the
perimeter of the Big Collapsed Valley. After passing a fountain (marking the entrance of
the off-limits Tominc Cave), you'll come to a fork: The tunnel on the left is a round-trip de-
tour (returning to this point) that takes you to the thundering waterfall at the bottom of the
canyon,illustrating howtheRekaRivergrindslikeGod'sband-sawintotheland.Thestairs
in the middle lead to the upper part of the canyon; from here, more stairs on the left lead up
to the ticket booth. If you head straight past these stairs, you'll cross a modern bridge and
reach the entrance to the tour extension, described next.
Extension (Mahor č i č Cave and Small Collapsed Valley): Following the directions
above, you'll wind up along the rim of the Big Collapsed Valley across from the Škocjan
exit (at a modern bridge). Here, a ticket-taker will ask to see your ticket. You'll hike along a
“naturalbridge”(actuallyashortstretchofcave)fromtheBigCollapsedValleytotheSmall
CollapsedValley;circlingthroughhere,you'llwinddowntotheentrancetoMahor č i č Cave,
whereyou'llwalkjustabovetheRekaRiver.Comparedtothemaincaveontheclassictour,
Mahor č i č is smaller, but very atmospheric, as it's short enough to let in evocative rays of
natural light—and you're much closer to the surface of the river. Exiting this cave, you'll
hike uphill about a half-mile, across farm fields, to get back to the ticket office.
