In-Depth Information
By public transportation, it's trickier. Take the train or bus to Diva č a (see “Ljubljana
Connections,” here ),whichisaboutthreemilesfromthecaves.TogetfromtheDiva č atrain
station to the caves, you can either take the local shuttle bus (4/day June-Sept, less off-sea-
son, typically coordinated to meet certain arriving trains); hike about 45 minutes; or take a
taxi (around €10-15, try calling Sežana-based Taxi Šeki, tel. 041/621-347).
Services: You'llfindWCsattheticketofficeandatthestartingpointfortheclassictour,
but none in the caves themselves. The ticket office has free lockers—ask for the key.
Eating: A snack bar at the cave ticket office sells basic €6-7 sandwiches and other
snacks.
Expect Changes: Trails at Škocjan are being repaired and new ones are planned, so de-
tails may change. The staff are helpful about explaining your options.
Visiting the Caves: Upon arrival, get a ticket for the next tour (including the extension
if you choose). You'll pass waiting time at a covered terrace with an info kiosk, gift shop,
café, and interactive educational center with exhibits about the caves.
Classic Tour: At tour time, your guide (toting an industrial-strength flashlight) calls
everyone together, and you march silently for 10 minutes to the cave entrance. There you
split into language groups and enter the cave.
The first half of the experience is the “Silent Caves” (so called for the lack of running
water), with a wide array of wondrous formations and what seem like large caverns. The
experience builds and builds as you go into ever-more-impressive grottoes, and you think
you've seen the best.
