In-Depth Information
Language
The main language of Guatemala is Spanish, although in very rural destinations it may be
a distant second language to the local Maya dialect. Highly educated Guatemalans, tour-
ism industry workers and the many Guatemalans who have spent time working in the US
are likely to speak at least some English. It's useful and polite to know at least some Span-
ish, and even a hearty 'buenos días' can go a long way to getting an interaction off on the
right foot. See Language ( Click here ) for more information.

» Greetings When meeting someone personally, men shake hands with men, women air-
kiss women and men and women may air-kiss or shake - wait to see if she offers her
hand, fellas.
» Photos The Maya can be very touchy about being photographed. Always ask permis-
sion before taking pictures.
» Maya Women Many Maya women avoid contact with foreign men, as virtuous Maya
women don't talk with strange men. Male travelers in need of information should ask an-
other man.
» Entering a Room In public places such as a restaurant or waiting room, make a general
greeting to everyone - buenos días or buenas tardes will do.
» Dress General standards of modesty in dress have relaxed somewhat. Coastal dwellers
tend to show a lot more skin than highland types, but not all locals appreciate this type of
attire.
