Peace Accords
President de León's elected successor, Álvaro Arzú of the center-right Partido de Avanzada
Nacional (PAN; National Advancement Party), took office in 1996. Arzú continued negoti-
ations with the URNG and, finally, on December 29, 1996, 'A Firm and Lasting Peace
Agreement' was signed. During the 36 years of civil war, an estimated 200,000 Guatem-
alans had been killed, a million made homeless, and untold thousands had disappeared.
