Belize City (Q160, four to five hours, 220km) Línea Dorada ( 7924-8535) leaves at 7am, re-
turning from Belize City at 1pm. This bus connects with boats to Caye Caulker and Am-
bergris Caye.
Bethel/La Técnica (Mexican border) (Q35/40, 4½ hours, 127km) ACTEP ( 7924-8215),
with an office on the left side of the terminal, runs five microbuses to Bethel between
11am and 4:30pm, continuing on to La Técnica.
Carmelita (Q40, 4½ hours, 82km) Two Pinitas buses at 5am and 1pm from the market.
Cobán (six hours, 245km) Transportes Luna offers shuttle service from 9am (Q125),
picking up passengers from their hotels; purchase tickets at Aventuras Turísticas. Or take
a bus or minibus to Sayaxché, from where connecting microbuses leave for Cobán.
El Ceibo/La Palma (Mexican border) (Q35, four hours, 151km) El Naranjo-bound mi-
crobuses depart every 20 minutes, from 4:20am to 6pm, stopping at the El Ceibo junction,
from where there are shuttles to the border (Q10, 15 minutes). Five of these go all the way
to El Ceibo (Q40). At La Palma, on the Mexican side, you can find transportation to Ten-
osique, Tabasco (one hour).
El Remate (Q20, 40 minutes, 29km) Microbuses leave every half hour from 5am to 6pm.
Buses and minibuses to and from Melchor de Mencos will drop you at Puente Ixlú junc-
tion, 2km south of El Remate.
Esquipulas (Q110, eight hours, 440km) Transportes María Elena (
5850-4190) goes at 6am,
10am and 2pm via Río Dulce (Q60) and Chiquimula (Q100).
Guatemala City (eight to nine hours, 500km) Línea Dorada runs first-class buses at 10am
and 10pm (Q150), plus a deluxe bus (Q190) at 9pm. Autobuses del Norte ( 7924-8131;
www.adnautobusesdelnorte.com ) has 1st-class (Q150) and deluxe (Q200) buses at 9pm and 11pm,
respectively. All Línea Dorada and Autobuses del Norte buses pick up passengers in front
of the Gran Hotel de la Isla an hour prior to the Santa Elena terminal departure. Fuente del
Norte ( 7926-2999) runs 16 buses between 3:30am and 10:30pm (Q110), plus deluxe buses
at 10am, 2pm, 9pm and 10pm (Q160), although security problems have been reported by
passengers using this line.
Melchor de Mencos (Belizean border) (two hours, 100km) Microbuses (Q25) go about
every hour, 5:45am to 6pm. Línea Dorada Pullmans en route to Belize City depart at 7am
(Q35).
Poptún (1¾ hours, 113km) Take a Guatemala City-bound Línea Dorada bus (Q40) or a
microbus (Q25), going every 10 minutes, via Dolores, from 5am to 6:30pm.
