Museo Santa Bárbara
(Isle of Santa Bárbara; admission Q15; 8am-noon & 2-5pm) On an islet to the west of Flores, this mu-
seum holds a grab bag of Maya artifacts from nearby archaeological sites, all crammed in-
to a small room. There are over 9000 pieces, according to the caretaker who has a story
about every one of them. From San Benito dock, phone ( 7926-0660) or whistle for the
boatman, who'll take you across for Q10.
Some old broadcasting equipment was contributed by the caretaker's father, who was
an announcer for 40 years at Radio Petén, which still broadcasts from an adjacent build-
ing. After browsing the museum, enjoy chilled coconuts at the cafe by the dock.

Activities
The Guatemalan NGO Arcas (Asociación de Rescate y Conservación de Vida Silvestre; 7830-1374;
www.arcasguatemala.com ) has a rescue and rehabilitation center for wildlife on the mainland
northeast of Flores, where volunteers 'adopt' and feed animals that have been rescued
from smugglers and the illegal pet trade, such as macaws, parrots, jaguars and coatis. The
fee of Q1180 a week covers food and accommodation.
Language schools in San Andrés and San José provide the chance to get involved in
community and environmental projects.
Tours
Various travel agencies in Flores offer day tours to archaeological sites such as Tikal,
Uaxactún, Yaxhá and Ceibal. Prices, with a guide and lunch, range from Q125 for a basic
Tikal tour to Q1120 for a Ceibal excursion.
