four-day trips). The office is in Antigua but you can also hook up with this outfit in Río
Dulce. It makes the Belize and lake trips in alternate weeks.
Sleeping
Many places in Río Dulce communicate by radio, but all are reachable by telephone. The
bar at Bruno's will radio your choice of place to stay if necessary.
ON THE WATER
The places listed here are out of town on the water, which is the best place to be. You can
call or radio them and they'll come and pick you up. Mansión del Río ( 2335-3516;
www.mansiondelrio.com.gt ; r Q940) , just out of town, provides all-inclusive resort-style accom-
modation on the lakefront.

HOTEL

Located on the Río La Colocha, just across the water from the Castillo San Felipe, this
beautiful, simple Australian/Mexican-run place is built on stilts in the mangroves. The
whole place is constructed from wood, with thatched roofs, and windows are mosquito-
netted - there's not a pane of glass in sight.
Wildlife is particularly abundant around here, with blue warblers, pelicans, a 7ft iguana
and turtles making the surrounds their home. There's also a bar-restaurant. Drinks on the
deck overlooking the river are a great way to start, finish or while away the day. The be-
guiling menu features some Aussie classics and probably the best Mexican food you're
likely to find outside of Mexico. Call from Río Dulce or San Felipe and they'll come and
pick you up for free, even if you're just dropping in for lunch.

Across the bridge from Río Dulce town, this is a business run by Casa Guatemala and the
orphans it serves. It's an old (with the emphasis on old) backpacker favorite, set in a rick-
ety building with very basic rooms. The bar kicks on here at night.
If you're coming by lancha or bus, ask the driver to let you off here to spare yourself
the walk across the bridge.
