OFF THE BEATEN TRACK
JALAPA
Jalapa is a small, friendly town 78km west of Chiquimula, and the route between the two is a stunning one: verd-
ant gorges choked with banana trees alternate with fog-enveloped valleys. Jalapa isn't a tourist destination, but
the hotel scene is more than adequate -
Hotel Recinos
( 7922-2580; 2a Calle 0-80, Zona 2; s/d Q60/120) , by
the bus terminal, will appeal to budget-watchers, while the nearby
Posada de Don José Antonio
(
7922-5751; Av Chipilapa A 0-64, Zona 2; s/d Q160/220; ) offers several steps up in comfort. There's
plenty of food on offer around the terminal, too, including good coffee and a wide menu at
Florencia
(Av Chipi-
lapa 1-72, Zona 1; mains Q30-60; 7am-9pm) .
While you're here, consider making a day trip to
Parque Ecoturístico Cascadas de Tatasirire
(
5202-4150;
www.cascadasdetatasirire.com
; entry fee Q70, campsite per person Q70, r per person Q130;
8am-5pm) , a lovely private nature reserve with waterfalls and walking trails just out of town. You can camp out
here or stay in an extremely rustic 'eco-lodge'.
Buses leave regularly from Jalapa's central bus terminal for Chiquimula (Q23, 1½ hours) and Guatemala City
(Q30/25 pullman/2nd class). For Esquipulas, change in Chiquimula.
