Lanquín (Q25; 2½ to three hours) Transportes Martínez (6a Calle 2-40, Zona 4) has multiple depar-
tures throughout the day. Buses to Lanquin also depart from 7am to 4pm from the corner of 5a
Calle and 3a Av, Zona 4 , some continuing to Semuc Champey. Do check these times, though, as
they seem to be fluid.
San Pedro Carchá (Q3; 20 minutes; every 10 minutes) Buses depart from 6am to 7pm from
the lot in front of the Monja Blanca terminal.

Cobán has a couple of places that rent cars. Reserve your choice in advance. If you want
to go to Grutas de Lanquín or Semuc Champey, you'll need a 4WD vehicle. Rental com-

Around Cobán
Cobán, and indeed all of Alta Verapaz, has become a magnet for Guatemalan adventure
travel, both independent and organized. Not only are there scores of villages where you
can experience traditional Maya culture in some of its purest extant forms, there are also
caves running throughout the department, as well as waterfalls, pristine lagoons and many
other natural wonders yet to be discovered. Go find them!
