In-Depth Information
( 5752-5528; www.hotelateliedelmar.com ; s/d with fan Q440/610; ) This is one of the most
formal hotels in town, with lovely landscaped grounds and spacious, simple and beautiful
rooms. It's got the best swimming pool around, along with the widest menu and an on-site
art gallery. Prices include breakfast.
Café del Sol $$
( 5810-0821; www.cafe-del-sol.com ; s/d with fan from Q200/260, r with air-con from Q470; ) Set all
under one big thatched roof, the 'economy' rooms here are a bit disappointing compared
to the rest of the place. Across the road, the new annex offers 'standard' rooms that are a
better deal - more spacious, with an on-site swimming pool.
The restaurant's menu has some original dishes and you can eat on the terrace or in the
big palapa (thatched) dining area.
HOTEL
Eating
There are many simple seafood restaurants on Calle Principal. For the best cheap eats, hit
either of the two nameless comedores (basic, cheap eateries) on the last road to the right
before the beach, where you can pick up an excellent plate of garlic shrimp, rice tortillas,
fries and salad for Q40. All of the hotels have restaurants.
ITALIAN, SEAFOOD
Taberna El Pelicano $$
(mains Q40-110; 12-2pm & 6-10pm Wed-Sun) By far the best place to eat in town, with the widest
menu and most interesting food, like seafood risotto (Q80), beef carpaccio (Q75) and a
range of jumbo shrimp dishes (Q140).
Drinking
Las Mañanitas
( 12pm-late) On the beachfront at the end of the main street, this little bar is what Monter-
rico really needed - plenty of hammock chairs looking out over the beach, a good range of
drinks and low-key music playing in the background.
BAR
Playa Club
This venue, located at Johnny's Place, heats up on weekends, with plenty of reggaetón,
house music and drinks specials keeping the crowd moving.
