Sights & Activities
The lively indigenous market is filled daily with traders who come down from surround-
ing villages. Actually, it's about the only place you'll see traditional costumes in this
town, as most citizens are
ladinos
in modern garb.
Parque Central
Huehuetenango's main square is shaded by cylindrical ficus trees and surrounded by the
bird's-eye view of the situation, check out the little relief map of Huehuetenango depart-
ment, which lists altitudes, language groups and populations of the various municipal di-
visions.
PLAZA
Zaculeu
(admission Q50; 8am-4pm)
A remnant of the Mam capital, the Zaculeu archaeological zone
was restored by the United Fruit Company in the 1940s, leaving its pyramids, ball courts
and ceremonial platforms covered by a thick coat of graying plaster. Though hardly au-
thentic, the work goes further than others in simulating the appearance of an active reli-
gious center.
