( 7765-1111; www.pensionbonifaz.com.gt ; 4a Calle 10-50, Zona 1; s/d/tr Q575/685/795; ) The old-
est and grandest hotel in Xela looms above the Parque Centro América. Rooms are on the
top three floors; the 2nd-floor chambers surround a leafy colonial patio where breakfast is
served. Though interior decor is not as fabulous as you might expect, the opulent front bar
makes up for it.

Eating
Quetzaltenango has a good selection of places to eat in all price ranges. Cheapest are the
food stalls on the lower level of the central market, where snacks and main-course plates
are sold for Q10 or less. One very popular breakfast spot is Doña Cristy, serving atol de
elote (a hot maize beverage), empanadas and chuchitos (small tamales garnished with
chopped beets and grated cheese).

(14a Av C-51, Zona 1; sandwiches Q40; 10am-9:30pm) This lively pub/snack bar is reportedly the
first place to serve Xela's signature Cabro beer on tap, poured copiously into pitchers and
mugs (three per customer). To go along, they grill up long bologna-and-cheese sand-
wiches, brought to the table with squeeze bottles of green sauce. Classic!
