The tourist office ( 7755-8182; cnr 7a Calle & 2a Av, Zona 1; 8am-5pm Mon-Sat, 8am-noon Sun) , inside
the Mercado de Artesanías, can answer any question as long as it's posed in Spanish.
Banrural ( 8:30am-5pm Mon-Fri, 7am-1pm Sat) , on the Parque Principal, changes traveler's
checks; the Cajero 5B is in the Town Hall building, opposite the park. The post office (5a Av
4-37) is one block northwest of the park. La Red, inside El Descanso, offers internet access.
Getting There & Away
The bus terminal is just below the market. Microbuses bound for Santa Cruz del Quiché,
via Sacapulas, go every half hour from 4am until 5pm (Q25, two hours), departing from
behind the church at the corner of 5a Av and 7a Calle. To head west to Huehuetenango,
change at Sacapulas. To get to Uspantán and Cobán, get off at the Cunén junction (Q15)
and hail any eastbound microbus.
Microbuses to Chajul (Q7, 45 minutes) depart every 20 minutes or so until 6pm from in
front of the Hotel Villa Nebaj, on Calz 15 de Septiembre.
The main bus terminal, behind the market OFFLINE MAP GOOGLE MAP , mainly serves
outlying villages such as Tzalbal, Vicalama and Palop; a midnight bus travels all the way
to Guatemala City (Q55, 5½ hours) via Chichicastenango.

Chajul

A good paved road winds northeast through piney slopes to Chajul, an impoverished but
intensely traditional village, where age-old customs are still widely practiced. Women
stroll arm-in-arm wearing maroon cortes (wraparound skirts), earrings made from silver
coins, and bright blue or purple huipiles woven with geometric patterns. Along the dirt
streets, adobe structures with tile roofs propped up by carved wooden pillars are inter-
spersed with patches of maize and squash. Tuesday and Friday are market days.
