Café San Miguel $
( 7755-1488; 2 Av 4-42; sandwiches Q12; 8am-8pm) Opposite the cathedral, this little bakery-
cafe is a popular gathering place, with good coffee and fresh baked goods on offer.
Muffins are called cubos here; pan dormido is bread that's been allowed to lie around for
a few days.

served with homemade salsas. You could make a light meal of the tortilla-sized portions.
Dining is in pleasant gardens beneath an arbor. It's a few blocks east of the big clock
tower.

Quiché's tourist office ( 7755-1106; turismo enquiche@gmail.com; 8am-4:30pm Mon-Fri) , inside the
town hall, has all the answers and they'll give you a baroquely detailed map. Banco
Agromercantil, at the plaza's north end, has a Cajero 5B ATM. Get online at Bear Net (7a
Calle 0-15B; 8:30am-9pm) , a block south of the plaza.
Note that each zona has its own street-avenue grid, so numbered calles and avenidas re-
peat themselves.
Getting There & Away
El Quiché is the jumping-off point for the remote reaches of northern Quiché, which ex-
tend all the way to the Mexican border.The main bus terminal, a dusty lot in Zona 5, is
located four blocks south and two blocks east of the plaza.
Chichicastenango (Q6, 35 minutes) Frequent microbuses depart from a parking lot off
the southwest corner of the main plaza.
Guatemala City (Q35, three hours) Every 15 minutes, 3am to 5pm.
Huehuetenango (Q25, two hours) Every half hour from 5am to 5:30pm.
Nebaj (Q20, two hours) Five buses via Sacapulas 9am to 4:30pm.
Sacapulas (Q12, one hour) Microbuses depart from 1a Av off the northeast corner of
main plaza every half hour till 6:30pm.
Uspantán (Q25, two hours) Microbuses every 20 minutes from 5:30am to 8:30pm.
