from the dock on the left. The German-owned operation is remarkable value, with dorm
and a few private rooms occupying a garden flanked by coffee plants. Some little houses
are available for longer-term renters. Authentic bratwurst and goulash (Q24) are served at
the cafe, along with shots of Zacapa rum (Q15).
Vulcano Lodge $$

contains eight trim and spotless rooms scattered amidst srawling gardens dotted with cac-
tus, agave and heliconia. There's also a restaurant serving a lavish five-course dinner with
fresh, local ingredients. Owners Terje and Monica are well versed in local walking routes.
Coming up from the dock, take a right though the village and over a bridge.

La Casa del Mundo Hotel & Café $$$

the volcanoes is one of Guatemala's most spectacular hotels. It features sumptuous gar-
dens, lake swimming from Mediterranean-style terraces, and a wood-fired hot tub over-
hanging the lake (Q275 for up to 10 bathers). The best rooms seem to float above the wa-
ter, with no land visible beneath.
Every room is outfitted with comfortable beds, Guatemalan fabrics and fresh flowers.
The restaurant serves a toothsome four-course dinner (Q100). You can rent kayaks (Q50
per hour) for exploring the lake. Reservations are advisable.

seasonally varying menu and a popular happy hour highlighted by purple-basil mojitos.
Sunday brunch is a big deal with to-die-for eggs Benedict. Guests tend to unwind in the
hot tub or infinity pool.
