A two-minute walk down the
path off San Marcos' central plaza, the Paco Real has simple but stylish rooms in thatched
cottages, each uniquely designed. The little shelters that dot the grounds make great
hangout areas.

Set in gardens that stretch right to the shores of
Lago de Atitlán, Posada Schumann has neat rooms in stone or wooden cottages, some
with kitchen, most with bathroom. A cafe deck has been salvaged from the lakefront ac-
commodations submerged by encroaching waters. Don't miss the igloo-shaped sauna. San
Marcos' main boat dock is right outside the gate.

Hospedaje Panabaj $

The only accommodation in San Marco's center, the basic Panabaj
stands behind the school that's immediately above the main plaza. Elevated rooms get
plenty of light through stained-glass windows, and though the wooden beds are somewhat
droopy, it's pretty quiet aside from the fluttering of butterfly wings in the garden. Clean
toilets and showers are down the hall.

The eco-chic Aaculaax seems
to sprout organcially from the living rock of the hillside, with recycled glass, plastic and
other flotsam ingeniously incorporated as construction materials. Each of the 11 rooms is
unique, with handcrafted furnishings, picture windows and lake-view balconies; some
have kitchens. An abundant buffet breakfast (Q50), with homemade bread and granola, is
served on the main terrace.
From the dock, it's a six-minute walk to the left (west) along the lakeside path.

This newcomer fea-
tures seven rustic bungalows (three log, four stone) in two separate banks with large front
windows (which unfortunately cannot be opened). The on-site restaurant/bar does wood-
fired pizzas. From the dock, take the first left.
