Las Pirámides Meditation Center
( 5205-7302; www.laspiramidesdelka.com ) San Marcos La Laguna's claim to fame has been
providing spiritual guidance for more than two decades. Most structures on the lakeshore
retreat are pyramidal in shape and oriented to the four cardinal points, including the two
temples where sessions are held. A one-month personal development course begins every
full moon, with three sessions daily.
There's also a three-month solar course running from each equinox to the following sol-
stice (the moon course is a prerequisite). Nonguests can come for the meditation (Q50) or
Hatha yoga (Q40, 7am to 8am) sessions. Accommodations are available, to course parti-
cipants only, in pyramid-shaped houses for Q175 per day, slightly less by the week or
month. This price includes the course, use of the sauna, and access to a fascinating library.
It also has a vegetarian restaurant, and room to wander about in the medicinal herb
garden.
MEDITATION
San Marcos Holistic Centre
( www.sanmholisticcentre.com ; 10am-5pm Mon-Sat) Run by various resident and visiting practi-
tioners, the center provides a range of massages, holistic therapies and training courses in
kinesiology, EFT, reiki, shiatsu, massage and reflexology. The approach is relaxed and
you're welcome to discuss possibilities before committing to anything. Most massages
and therapies cost around Q250 per 90-minute session.
MEDITATION
Cerro Tzankujil
(admission Q15; 8am-6pm) Completed in 2011, this nature reserve is on a sacred hill west of
San Marcos village. Well-maintained pebbly trails lead to swimming areas with shelters
by the bank and a diving platform. The water is crystal clear here. A branch off the main
trail ascends to a Maya altar on the summit, while a lower spur reaches a volcano lookout.
PARK
Jovenes Maya Kaqchikeles
( 5787-7728; atitlanresource.com/jovenesmayas_eng.htm ; 9am-5pm Mon-Sat) This group of bright,
ecologically minded locals, some of whom speak English, offer guided hikes to San Pedro
La Laguna (2½ hours) and Santa Cruz La Laguna (four hours), each at Q100 per person,
including the lancha back. Stop by their clubhouse, just above the Posada del Bosque En-
cantado, to discuss the possibilities.
