Looming above the village, Volcán San Pedro almost asks to be climbed by anyone with
an adventurous spirit. It is the most accessible of the three volcanoes in the zone and, as
it's classified as a municipal ecological park, it's regularly patrolled by tourism police.
GUIDED HIKE
Excursion Big Foot

At the first crossroads up from the Panajachel dock, this group
has a track record of responsibility. Departures are at 6am with at least six participants
(Q100 each, including entry fees). The ascent is through fields of maize, beans and
squash, followed by primary cloud forest. It's a three-hour climb; take water, snacks, a hat
and sunblock.

Another popular hike goes up the hill to the west of the village that is referred to as
Indian
Nose
- its skyline resembles the profile of an ancient Maya dignitary.
Asoantur

, an association made up of 25 Tz'utujil guides from the
local community, leads expeditions to the peak for Q100 per person. They also offer cul-
tural tours of San Pedro and nearby coffee plantations, horseback riding tours, and kayak,
bicycle and motorbike rentals. They operate from a hut on the lane up from the Pana dock.
Kayaks
are available for hire (per hour Q15), turning right from the Pana dock. Ask for
Nicolás at Natalí hairdressers.

If the lake hasn't swallowed it up by the time your
read this, have a swim at La Piscina, by the Santiago dock, a global gathering place that
revolves around a pool. Sundays are busiest with barbecues and boccie ball.
