of the ferry dock along the road to San Lucas is this newcomer, featuring modern, com-

Run by an amiable Spaniard, the Bambú is an ecologically harmonious hotel. Sc-
attered around wild yet manicured grounds, the 10 spacious rooms are in grass- or
bamboo-roofed buildings, with cypress fittings and earthy tile floors. A pebbly path leads
to a swimming pool in a serene, jungly setting. It's 600m from the dock; if you're arriving
by boat, ask to be dropped off at the hotel dock.
Eating & Drinking
Restaurant El Gran Sol $
( 7721-7157; mains Q55; 7:30am-7:30pm) One block up from the dock on the left, this
family-run establishment is a good bet for breakfast, lunch or snacks, with a spiffy kitchen
and thatched-roof deck over a cacophonous junction. Thelma and clan love to cook; ask
for one of her specials.

GUATEMALAN
Comedor Santa Rita $
(lunch Q20; noon-7pm Mon-Fri) The latest incarnation of a generations-old dining hall, Santa
Rita is a good place to try such Maya specialties as pulique (a veggie-rich stew) and patín
(spicy tomato and minnow dish), served with a stack of tortillas and refresco . It's located
half a block east of the market.
Café Quila's
(burgers Q20-30; 5-10pm Wed-Sun) Quila's is a casual gathering place where expats and lake-
dwellers can bond over sports TV or ping pong. Some of the best burgers on the lake are
served in the front lounge or wonderful rear patio, which has a mural of Santiago. Coming
up from the dock take the first right.
