painted lodging is managed by a Kaqchiquel extended family whose activities are on full
view. Mattresses sag and water outages are common but the lake views make up for it,
particularly from units 21 to 23.

Almost hidden down a
narrow alley through cornfields is this solitary structure with balconies, arched windows
and a spiral staircase to a roof terrace. Though it could use an upgrade - or just a fresh
coat of paint - it still makes a nifty budget retreat.

At the end of the row of hotels leading up from the Playa Pública, the 'king of the road' is
about the tidiest and quietest option, and everything works. Two levels of spacious units
with quality beds face a clipped suburban lawn where hummingbirds flit around. At the
rear are three bungalows, each with two rooms and kitchens.
