Meiosis
In humans, this process reduces the 46 chromosome number of the diploid
precursor cell to the 23 chromosomes of the haploid gamete. During meio-
sis, there is one round of DNA duplication followed by two divisions:
mei-
osis I
and
meiosis II
. Meiosis only occurs in the germ cells (sperm and egg).
