As the UV laser traces the shape of successive cross sections, the solidiied
parts are slowly lowered into the tank.
A downside of SL printing is that fumes from uncured photopolymers can
be toxic to breathe. Also, photopolymers are not as strong and durable as
their thermoplastic cousins used in industrial injection molding. The cost
and complexity of maintaining a machine that uses lasers makes SL printers
too expensive for most home users, but cheaper machines that use low-cost
UV lasers from Blu-ray discs may grow this market. SL printers can currently
print with only a single material at a time.
Here is one of the world's irst 3D print jobs. The
technique used, SL, dates back to the early 1980s.
