design solutions. In fact, somewhat like an artist browsing the web for inspira-
tion before beginning a new project, interactive design software could inspire
new ideas by provoking the designer to venture into design solutions that no
one else has yet thought of.
We made a working prototype of interactive design software in my lab. A
former student, Jeff Clune, created the software. Jeff and his team made the
software available on a website which he named Endless Forms, a play on
Darwin's famous description of the process of biological evolution.
Here's how Endless Forms works. People breed dogs by crossing dogs that
have certain characteristics they want to appear in their puppies. Endless
Forms allows a user to “breed” designs by choosing the ones they like. In other
words, the Endless Forms' website brokers a rapid back-and-forth exchange
between the user and the interactive design software.
The Endless Forms website allows users to choose designs they like and reine those
designs over several iterations.
