Rampant counterfeiting erodes proit margins. Add to that the devastating
effect of unrealistic intellectual property laws that attempt to enforce private
ownership of ideas in an era when anybody can 3D print exact copies of
anything.
The solution is to create realistic and balanced legal frameworks. As elo-
quently expressed in an article about molecular manufacturing by the Center
for Responsible Nanotechnology, “Some of these risks arise from too little
regulation, and others from too much regulation. Several different kinds of
regulation will be necessary in several different ields. An extreme or knee-
jerk response to any of these risks will simply create fertile ground for other
r i sk s.” 11
The legal challenges introduced by 3D printing licker on the edges of public
consciousness. We're just now beginning to explore this new frontier. It won't
be long now until the law saunters in to see what's going on.
